[Favorite]
http://www.dapenti.com/blog/more.asp?name=xilei&id=13965

http://www.gapingvoid.com/Moveable_Type/archives/004639.html
About a year ago, I was at a geek breakfast in London with Steve Clayton and some other folk, including a few people from Microsoft.
Steve and some other geeks were talking about "The Cloud". At the time Steve was making the transition from working in the UK Partner Division, to working in the "Software & Services" division of Microsoft, which is how the conversation came up.
Right then and there I drew the cartoon above. Steve saw it, and right away asked me if he could use the picture for his business card, which he now does.
That was the first time I really started paying attention to the term, "The Cloud".
I would by no means call myself an expert or an authority on the subject, but in the last couple of months I've been getting increasingly aware of "Cloud Thinking". It's seriously interesting to me.
As far as I can tell, all three of the big tech companies I know best, Microsoft, Sun and Dell, seem to be betting a lot of their future on The Cloud.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~3/357949140/will_the_semantic_web_have_a_g.php
One academic warns that it might and says we need to pay attention to it.
As machines learn to understand what the web means, what perspective will they understand it from? Who is teaching them? "Objective" descriptions of the world and the relationships in it can cause real problems, particularly for people with little power in those relationships. How will the emerging Semantic Web understand relationships and what will that mean for us as human users?
Austrian researcher Corinna Bath argues that there is a real risk that the semantic web of the future will be built with the perspectives and assumptions of male computer scientists baked-in unconsciously - at the expense of everyone else.
Background
Corinna Bath is currently research fellow at the "Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society" in Graz, Austria.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ThinkingSpace/~3/357965172/china-how-to-understand-this-country.html
This is the second time I post outside of the theme of this blog. The first time is at May this year after Si Chuan earthquake had taken away the life of tens of thousands people. This time is right before the open of Beijing Olympics. Both posts are about China, where I was born.
Beijing Olympics is an important event to Chinese people. It is a demonstration of the rise of new China after a nearly two-century-long painful and humiliating history. As a Chinese myself, I feel happy and proud of the nation and especially of the Chinese people. At the time when we enjoy the games, there is, however, a question worth of thinking---where will the country go afterward?
China, still a nation of mystery in many western people's mind, how to understand this country properly?
History---a double-edged sword
When mentioning China, the first thought jumped into mind is probably its long history.

http://techdirt.com/articles/20080805/0216441890.shtml
For some unfortunate reason, there seems to be this idea that "open" solutions are somehow a less feasible business strategy. There are still those that sneer at open source companies as somehow being less-than-true-businesses, despite an awful lot of evidence to the contrary. But beyond just being a good business strategy, it's worth pointing out that "open" solutions will almost always win in the end, because they simply provide more opportunities. For years, AOL insisted on a walled garden strategy -- and in the mid-90s there were many who believed that AOL's proprietary system would "beat" the wider internet. How's that looking these days?
More recently, there's been concern about the various "walled gardens" in the mobile space -- which folks like Walt Mossberg have referred to as "the Soviet ministries." Jonathan Zittrain has been beating the drum, insisting that a closed system, like the iPhone's, is a dangerous trend. However, it seems quite like looking at AOL vs.

[Favorite] Major Developments Continue to Bring Lifestreaming to the Mainstream
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Lifestreamblogcom/~3/357099720/
It was October of last year when I wrote about a Wired story talking about Plaxo Pulse that generated some of the first rumblings of Lifestreaming entering into the mainstream. Then in January I asked if 2008 would bring Lifestreaming to the masses. Clearly it had now become "Wired" which is a little scary as that sometimes means that something has jumped the shark. But I think in this case we're not going to see that happen.
Now fast forward a few months later and some major notable events. Just a few weeks ago Facebook releases a site re-design which puts a heavy focus on the activity stream and the recently added abilities to import your data from other services and comment on them. TechCrunch proclaims that it's The FriendFeedization of Facebook. This change by Facebook single handedly had the ability to turn millions of Facebook pages into Lifestreams overnight.

[Favorite] 7 Essential Guidelines For Functional Design
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/08/05/7-essential-guidelines-for-functional-design/
By Dustin M. Wax
Look at what you've made. Beautiful, isn't it? But does it work? For whom does it work? Of course you can use it, but can anyone else? In short, is it functional?
At the heart of every piece of practical design, whether it be a website, product package, office building, manufacturing system, piece of furniture, software interface, book cover, tool, or anything else, there is a function, a task the item is expected to perform. Most functions can be achieved in a variety of ways, but there are some basic elements a designer needs to take into account to create a product that best fulfills its intended function.
These are the elements of functional design, the process of responding to the needs or desires of the people who will use an item in a way that allows their needs or desires to be met. Functional design is both an outcome and a process.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/001161.html
Although I love reading programming books, I find software project management books to be some of the most mind-numbingly boring reading I've ever attempted. I suppose this means I probably shouldn't be a project manager. The bad news for the Stack Overflow team is that I effectively am one.
That's not to say that all software project management books are crap. Just most of them. One of the few that I've found compelling enough to finish is Johanna Rothman's Behind Closed Doors: Secrets of Great Management. She co-wrote it with Esther Derby.
After reading it, you'll realize this is the book they should be handing out to every newly minted software project manager. And you'll be deeply depressed because you don't work with any software project managers who apparently have read it.
I originally discovered Johanna when one of her pieces was cited in the original Spolsky Best Software Writing book.

http://almaer.com/blog/code-review-two-very-different-stories-of-lost-wallets
The last week and a smidgen have been very surreal when it comes to wallets, and losing them. This is a Yin and Yang tale of losing wallets, and what happened to them. I get to play the part of a Baboon as I earn a mention for the Darwin awards with how I lost my wallet.
But, first, wallet number one:
Stolen: Union Square
Emily and my family were enjoying some time in Union Square, when at some point during the trip, Emily come to realize that her purse had been stolen out of her bag. It would be an easy thing to do for anyone who wanted, as she was carrying Sam, our two year old, at the same time.
Just in case, we looked all over, but as soon as I checked out account we saw that the person had indeed started to use it. It makes you sick to think about someone running around with your information. The purse had so much in it.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ThinkingSpace/~3/352927998/why-do-we-bookmark.html
The newly updated delicious.com (former del.icio.us) has brought people another round of interest about social bookmarking. Nova Spivack, the founder and CEO of RN/Twine, just posted his thought of the topic in his public Twine. After reading it, I still want to ask a question: why do we bookmark?
According to Mathew Ingram, bookmarking should already have been out of fashion. Once people have bookmarked a few links using social bookmarking services such as delicious.com, how many times do they really go back and watch their bookmarked items again? Based on Mathew's observation, the answer is very few and nearly to zero. Then the immediate conclusion must be that bookmarking is generally nothing but wasting of time. What value may we gain from bookmarking when we actually never watch the items bookmarked?
To response to Mathew's argument, Nova suggested Twine---his own baby---by saying that Twine will actually bring the experience of bookmarking to another level.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ThinkingSpace/~3/353780106/future-of-email.html
If there is a service that is used the most frequently by most of the Web users, it must be email. The invention of email is often thought to be the killer application of Internet. Without email, the adoption of Internet might have been delayed for several years.
Recently, however, email seems facing a little bit challenge. With the rise of new services such as instant message, wiki, Twitter, and all kinds of social networking functions, email is already no longer the solely primary choice for online communication. How should email be improved to satisfy the rapidly evolving Web?
First of all, we should not try to construct some super-email service that integrates all kinds of new service functions from IM to social networking. It would be a monster too heavy for users to drive, as Alex Iskold pointed out in his post.
Here are a few features I believe a new-generation email should be equipped. Email does not have to replace the other services.

At ProgrammableWeb we have been monitoring the emergence of mashups and APIs since 2005, and while there has always been steady growth, this year has seen an accelerating acceptance of APIs as a business strategy. The most recent evidence is that over 60 API entries have been added to our database in the last 30 days.
As recently as April, we were commenting on reaching 40 entries a month. It's clear that APIs directed to the consumer have reached a level of maturity and widespread usage among the Web 2.0 upstarts and major Internet players, while enterprise usage is following right behind.
Let's look at how the 60 break down by number in each category:
- 8 in the Social API category
- 5 in the Search API category
- 4 Music APIs, and 4 Government APIs
- 3 Mapping APIs, Medical APIs, Reference APIs
- 2 each under Internet API, Photo API, Other API, Travel API, Email API, Messaging API, Feed API, Financial API.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/oreilly/radar/atom/~3/351781512/open-source-and-cloud-computing.html
I've been worried for some years that the open source movement might fall prey to the problem that Kim Stanley Robinson so incisively captured in Green Mars: "History is a wave that moves through time slightly faster than we do." Innovators are left behind, as the world they've changed picks up on their ideas, runs with them, and takes them in unexpected directions.
In essays like The Open Source Paradigm Shift and What is Web 2.0?, I argued that the success of the internet as a non-proprietary platform built largely on commodity open source software could lead to a new kind of proprietary lock-in in the cloud.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/001159.html
As we begin the private beta for Stack Overflow later this week, I wondered: where do the software terms alpha and beta come from? And why don't we ever use gamma?
Alpha and Beta are the first two characters of the Greek alphabet. Presumably these characters were chosen because they refer to the first and second rounds of software testing, respectively.
But where did these terms originate? There's an uncited Wikipedia section that claims the alpha and beta monikers came, as did so many other things, from the golden days of IBM:
The term beta test comes from an IBM hardware product test convention, dating back to punched card tabulating and sorting machines. Hardware first went through an alpha test for preliminary functionality and small scale manufacturing feasibility.

[Favorite] Cloud Computing Panel Recap
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Centernetworks-/~3/350980779/cloud-computing-panel
Last night a Cloud Computing panel was held at the offices of Meetup Inc. (thanks to Jonah Keegan) and had great speakers and a great audience.
Our speakers were: Mike Nolet-AppNexus, Jamal Mazhar-Kaavo, Hans Zaunere-New York PHP, Hank Williams, Geir Magnusson-10gen and Ronald Bradford-42SQL
The panel started with an attempt at defining what cloud computing is. The term has become too popular and hence everyone started using it too loosely. So it now means different things to different people, but mainly, it's the abstraction of services from hardware and scaling of data services properly so that services can scale to run on any number instances easily for different levels of demand.
But services do not move magically into the cloud and scale. Almost all applications have to be re-architected and rewritten.

[Favorite] Study: Women Outnumber Men on Most Social Networks
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~3/350264792/social_networks_women_outnumber_men.php
Online reputation company Rapleaf has released a new study of 49.3 million people, revealing gender and age data about social network users. On most of the main social networks - including MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Hi5 - women outnumber men by a considerable amount. On Facebook, the 18-24 age group is largest, with 1,685,029 women in that age group compared to 977,753 men. In MySpace, the same age group dominates, with 7,091,214 women and 5,226,788 men.
The only social networks studied that didn't have more women than men in the 18-24 year old group were venerable old LinkedIn (where incidentally the 25-34 age group was tops) [...]

[Favorite] Platform: One Year(ish) later
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/FacebookBlog/~3/351161070/blog.php
Last year in May, we held a big developer conference, f8. As you may know, we used f8 to introduce Facebook Platform—a development system that enables developers to build applications on Facebook, where all of our 90 million users can interact with them.
Honestly, the fact that applications grew so quickly was a surprise—even to us. We've learned a lot in this last year, and with success also found a new set of problems that we needed to solve. This year at f8, we talked about a lot of our new solutions and how they all fit together. We'd like to share all of that with you, as well.
At Facebook, we want to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. With that in mind, here are some of the big announcements from f8 08:
- The new profile: You may already know about the new profile, and we hope you've already spent some time looking at the new Facebook.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/oreilly/radar/atom/~3/346155251/oscon-day-2-do-you-believe-in.html
After enjoying Ben Collins-Sussman and Brian Fitzpatrick's comments on the anti-patterns panel yesterday, I decided to peek into their "Do You Believe in the Users?" presentation. Ben and Fitz started the presentation with "Successful software requires more than just technical effort." as their premise and then went on to build on that premise.
Ben and Fitz used the analogy of meat as technical effort and sizzle as fluff or marketing around the project. Most engineers obsess about truth and use rigorous logic in their thinking, whereas marketing is slimy and to be distrusted. But, Ben and Fitz point out that it is ok to add sizzle without feeling dirty. In a lot of cases its required to have a successful open source project. They offered the example of analysts coming to the Apache Software Foundation to get the scoop on Apache software. The analysts asked the Apache folks to fill out a form about the software and they were swiftly rebuked: "Fill it out yourself!".

[Forgot The Milk] 我的bug岁月

[Forgot The Milk]

[Blogging Mill] SNS

[Blogging Mill]
