http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Sarahintampa/~3/s2olpyJRR-o/tweeple-twak-the-twitter-app-ive-been-dying-to-show-you.html
When a friend showed me the Twitter app he was building not too long ago, I was pretty darned excited. I knew for a fact that this app would greatly appeal to Twitter users who would like to keep track of their followers, especially in the wake of the great Twitter follower drop of 2008, courtesy of Twitter themselves.
The app is called Tweeple Twak and it lets you track your Twitter followers and keep an eye on trends. You can see when someone un-follows you and you have the option of sending a discrete message to that person to find out why they decided to do so. It may not win them back, but it certainly would provide some valuable insight into who's unfollwing you and why.
In addition, Tweeple Twak provides some nice charts and graphs that help you keep an eye on follower trends. Did you get a big bump in followers one month? Now you'll be able to visualize when that spike happened. Lost a lot of folks one day? Maybe it was something you said.

[Favorite] Blog Hosting - Which Hosts Top Blogs Use
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ProbloggerHelpingBloggersEarnMoney/~3/iLOifaWRZHM/
Who is Hosting This has put together a great little study into the blog hosts of the top 100 bloggers (according to Technorati).
On top of the list is Media Temple, Datagram, BlogSpot and Six Apart.
Yes you heard it, 8 of the top 100 blogs use Blogspot and 4 use Six Apart to host their blogs. It goes to show that while most (including me) would advise you set up your blog on your own hosting and with a platform like WordPress that you can actually grow a successful blog on a hosted platform like Blogspot.
Of course keep in mind that many of the blogs in the top 100 are in networks so they just go with who everyone else is with in their network and some of the services that the bigger blogs use are probably out of the range of what most bloggers can afford.
If you're looking for a blog host you might also want to check out ProBlogger Readers Blog Hosting Recommendations (in the comments of that post).

[LifeStreamBlog] New Lifestream Plugin for Wordpress Released

A new Lifestream plugin was released a few weeks ago simply called "Lifestream". It's written by David Cramer. He apparently began using the RSS Stream Lifestreaming plugin and decided to roll his own version shortly after. You can view it in action on his site here.
RSS Stream is a great plugin and this one just takes it a step further by using the SimplePie parser and offering more flexibility in the feeds it can use.

[LifeStreamBlog] Soup.io Gets Some Love Today

Tumblr was one of the first Lifestreaming services that gained popularity with it's minimalist blogging approach with beautifully designed sites. Unfortunately I feel that they took a step backwards when they began limiting sites to only allow for 5 feeds to be imported.
Last year in my coverage I came across a very similar service called Soup.io which I feel offers richer options, support for more services, and great flexibility.

[Favorite] Feed.Informer Relaunches Its All-in-one RSS Toolbox
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/readwriteweb/~3/zM2XTr58iNU/feedinformer_relaunches_its_al.php
There is an infinite variety of things you can do with RSS feeds and a substantial number of those things can be done with Feed.Informer, which was formerly known as Feed Digest and just relaunched today. This super useful service was acquired in a small, unreported deal earlier this year and today comes out of a dormant period when new account creation was limited.
What can you do with Feed.Informer? You can splice feeds together, filter them for keywords and most importantly - display them dynamically on a web page with just a little bit of code. There are other services that do all of these things, but Feed.Informer is so quick and easy to use that a free account is worth checking out and a premium account may be worth paying for.
We Love Feed.Informer
Feed.Informer is a service I've used regularly for years and happily pay for every chance I get. It is the fastest, easiest and most user-centric way to publish items in a feed dynamically on a page.

[Favorite] Google Sinks $10 Million Into New Geothermal Technologies
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/m6mXmWb3apE/
Google's philanthropic arms, Google.org, is investing a little over $10 million into the development of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). Rather than extracting heat from the ground a few hundred feet down (or less) as traditional geothermal systems do, EGS goes several kilometers deep into the hot rock under the Earth.
If we could tap just two percent of that heat under the continental United States, one MIT study estimates that would supply more than 2500 times our energy needs. But getting that hot rock cost-effectively will require new technology. (See the video above for an illustration of a 50 megawatt EGS project in Australia).
The money will be broken up in the following way: $6.25 million will go to AltaRock Energy, another $4 million will go to Potter Drilling, and a $500,000 grant will go to a geothermal lab at Southern Methodist University.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/webware/~3/368699485/8301-17939_109-10019730-2.html
For the most part, the only person you can socialize with on a handheld GPS navigator is the chick who tells you to turn left after 100 yards.
Garmin wants to change that. The device manufacturer has partnered with location-based app company ULocate to bring its Where.com software, previously available only on compatible cell phones and carriers, to some of its devices. (It hasn't said which ones specifically.) This will give Garmin owners access to Where's own Buddy Beacon software, which shares users' current locations with friends. It can be hooked up to Where's Facebook application, too, so you can tell your friends where you are.
Personally, sharing my location isn't exactly what first comes to mind when I use an in-car GPS navigator, but some of Where's other services sound helpful: Yelp reviews, gas price comparisons from GasBuddy, and a handful of others.

[Favorite] Grooveshark Helps You Consume Tons of New Music without Searching For It
http://profy.com/2008/08/18/grooveshark-consume-tons-of-music-without-searching/
Today Grooveshark, an innovative music discovery and monetization platform, is unveiling its new Autoplay feature today that will make music consumption even easier than it was before with this excellent service. With Gorrveshark even if you don't have a huge library of tracks, you will soon build one - and it will contain only the music that you actually like without making you search for such music.
For those of you who missed our initial (very enthusiastic) review of Grooveshark back in March, this music service is a new way to discover, share, and monetize music in one place. In the model introduced by Grooveshark everyone gets paid via the P2P payments system at place: musicians and record labels, users who own the playlists that generate sales and, finally, Grooveshark itself.
The new Autoplay is a feature that allows you to build an entire music library based on only one song that you like.

You're writing and podcasting and videoblogging your face off and it's starting to feel like no one's paying attention. You want to get the right comments, and meaningful conversations started, or you want your peers to come and start a lively discourse. How do you get your best posts out there in such a way that people will come by and add to the body of work? (Note first that I've said "best posts" and not "every post." If you abuse any of this, it goes poorly for you pretty quickly.) I have nine ideas to share your best posts in ways that aren't heavy-handed, and aren't likely to get you tuned out by the people of your various communities.

[Post] Top 10 Wordpress Plugins from WordCamp 2008
Wordpress fans from far and wide congregated this weekend in San Francisco for WordCamp 2008. There is some great coverage in a live blogging style over at The Web Life. One of the interesting tidbits that I found over there was a list of the top 10 Wordpress plugins.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/webware/~3/366890564/8301-17939_109-10018574-2.html
Andrew Mager posted an illustrated play-by-play of Saturday's WordCamp, a conference devoted to the popular open-source blogging platform WordPress. According to Mager's report, the hosted version of WordPress has 2.3 million new blogs in 12 months and 35 million posts, and more than 6.5 billion page views.
(Credit: Andrew Mager)
Of particular interest for the WordPress crowd is BuddyPress, a set of plug-ins that brings Facebook-like features, such as friends, groups, private messaging, status updates, and extended profiles, to the blogging platform. (WordPress competitor Six Apart also recently introduced a social dimension to its Movable Type platform.)
BuddyPress is slated for 1.0 status in December 2008.

As Mager reported, unlike the popular social networks, BuddyPress isn't a closed environment: "Why do we need another social network? BuddyPress is not another "data silo" like Facebook and MySpace.

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Mashable/~3/JpXJhRaaBXQ/
It's getting easier to add our own faces into games, greeting cards and other online offerings. We've all seen those goofy customizable ElfYourself greeting cards that everyone and their mother were clogging email systems with last year. Well, the idea is spreading to other formats due to its extreme popularity and viral marketing stickiness. We've put together a list of 18 ways to quite literally get your head in the game.
What's your favorite? Tell us more about it in the comments.
- JibJab - Has been around a long time and was one of the first services to let you add your own noggin to their online greeting cards. Some of their humor is rather racy and not very family friendly, but sometimes their stuff is hilarious too. Being able to add yourself, your friends and family in the mix makes it even funnier. The only downside is that there isn't a lot of free stuff anymore.

[Favorite] Is Lifestreaming Going Mainstream? AOL Set to Snag SocialThing!
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/readwriteweb/~3/1HmUWm92ys4/is_lifestreaming_going_mainstream_aol_set_to_snag_socialthing.php
While there are many popular lifestreaming services out there such as FriendFeed and Profilactic, SocialThing! can be argued to be the more mainstream of them all, with a less geekier user interface and a more mainstream service focus. After snagging Bebo earlier this year, word spread that AOL was looking to buy SocialThing! Though it's only being confirmed again, we're wondering if lifestreaming is finally catching on to the mainstream masses.
Acquired Tastes
Earlier this year, AOL acquired Bebo for a hefty $850 million. While the news was huge, we didn't think the acquisition would be particularly beneficial to AOL or Bebo. I don't see this being any different with SocialThing! in the picture now. The acquisition is still coming to a close and no financial details have yet to be released. SocialThing! has published a blog post with more details about the acquisition.
Web 2.0 Going Mainstream?
This acquisition may have other results outside of bringing AOL more consumers.

Last.fm's music-centered social network is one of our favorite ways to discover, share, and stream music online. Currently in version 1.01, the Last.fm application for the iPhone and iPod Touch allows many of the best features of Last.fm to break away from your computer and go on the road with you. The Last.fm app isn't perfect, however, and people looking for a straightforward Internet radio application would do better with offerings from Pandora and AOL.
The Last.fm app's main menu offers many ways to hear streaming music...maybe too many.
When launching the Last.fm iPhone app for the first time, you'll be prompted to enter your existing Last.fm account username and password, or you'll be offered the option to create a new account.

[Favorite] Feedheads Breaks Out of Facebook to Compete In Shared Items Arena
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/LouisgraycomLive/~3/361595279/feedheads-breaks-out-of-facebook-to.html
Before ReadBurner, LinkRiver and RSSmeme arrived, there was only one game in town when it came to calculating the most popular shared items in Google Reader, and it was Feedheads. Feedheads, the popular Facebook application created by Mario Romero, harnessed the power of Google Reader to show the total number of shares each item had, displays which of your friends shared the item, and even what items were popular in a network (like "Silicon Valley", for instance).
But while ReadBurner and RSSmeme were gaining traction outside the walled garden of Facebook, and gathering a good deal of visibility from bloggers who liked their democratized view of finding "hot" stories, Feedheads remained less visible, available only on Facebook.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/chrisbrogandotcom/~3/360437668/
I was speaking to one of the best upcoming tech bloggers the other day about LinkedIn, and how I view it. To me, LinkedIn isn't a place to dump a snapshot of where you've been. It's an opportunity to stay connected to people, and to demonstrate where you are now, and where you plan to go next. To that end, I've got a little advice for you to consider applying to your own profile.
Write Your LinkedIn Profile For Your Future
First Impressions
First, your headline matters. It's what people see when they accept your invite, and it's probably the fastest first impression one receives. If you work for a company, put that name in the headline. When I don't see a company name, I wonder if you're solo.

[LifeStreamBlog] Major Developments Continue to Bring Lifestreaming to the Mainstream

Darren Rowse of ProBlogger asked if blogging has lost its relational focus; Scoble explained why tech blogging has failed you; and even though not everyone agreed with his every statement, there was a renewed commitment in the blogosphere to return to blogging about what excites instead of just writing about "Apple's newest gizmo or the peccadillos of tech personalities." However, we're wondering if people even need to blog anymore...at least in the traditional sense.
Once the main way to publish your own personal thoughts and opinions for the rest of the web to read, blogging started a movement that democratized the web. Everyone could be a publisher. But now, blogging as everyone's preferred method of communication may be over. What's taking its place? Lifestreaming.

[LifeStreamBlog] AOL Launches buddyupdates Lifestreaming Service and Nobody Noticed

If it wasn't for this tweet from Frank Gruber I would have never found out about AOL's new Lifestreaming service at buddyupdates.com and chances are if you wouldn't have either. Quite surprisingly I didn't see any of the major news outlets like ReadWriteWeb, Mashable, Webware or TechCrunch review or mention it.

[Post] May 13th Trip to Bevmo

I was considering joining a beer of the month club a while back but after giving it some though decided it wasn't as practical or as fun as scheduling a monthly outing to Bevmo to stock my liquor collection with some spirits. My thought was to go monthly and purchase several beers I have never tried.

[Post] How to Find Local Twitter Users From Your City
Twitterlocal.net is a site that lets you find local Twitter users based on proximity to a given location. They got mentioned quite a bit on Twitter today due to a newly created leader board that shows a breakdown of locations with the most tweets over the last 24 hours.

[Post] My Dog Chases a Cat. Epic Fail
I encourage my normally calm Chihuahua Cha Cha to chase a cat for a little exercise in my backyard and her attempt to hop the wall doesn't go as planned. Thankfully even though she failed, she dusted herself off and pretended that nothing ever happened. She's a trooper and I love her.

[Post] 11 Songs I Think Should Have Made VH1's Greatest Songs of the 90s
I really enjoyed the 5 part (and 5 hour if you don't have a DVR) special "100 Greatest Songs of the 90s" that VH1 ran. You can see the complete list on the VH1 site here. It did make me wonder though whether there were some songs that were neglected from the list. So I opened up Winamp and started looking through my music to see if I could spot any. It didn't take long to see that there were some blaring omissions. So behold my list of songs.

[Post] New Blog Feature - Quick Beer Reviews

This is the first in what may become a regular feature here on the blog. I fancy myself as a bit of a beer connoisseur. Well connoisseur may be overstating the facts a bit. I just like good beer, I'm not a snob about it, or know much about beers, but I do appreciate good ones.
I recently was interested in joining a monthly beer club but then realized it's a pretty simple task to create your own.

[Post] Crysis PC FAQ, Guide, Tips, Demo, Cheats, Tweaks and Other Info

The Crysis PC Game Demo came out on Friday and since then I've been searching for quite a bit of info to get the most out of it and prep for the game's full release in a few weeks. Finding this information can be tricky and for the most part it's tucked away in forum posts and comments littered all over many different sites.
