We all come across some seriously bad websites in our day-to-day lives on the Internet. It's just an unavoidable fact of life, like coming across monsters on the way to the market in video games. When you come across these things, you should approach them with a modicum of fear, for it is something you don't know, after all. But, more than that, you need to be brave, and you need to relish the experience with full sense of humor employed. Frontpage-made, animated gifs, ugly gradients...These are the 20 worst websites we could find from across the world.

[Favorite] Yahoo! upgrades Mail, Messenger, Search
http://ycorpblog.com/2009/08/24/the-evolution-of-mail-messenger-and-search/
Yahoo! has unveiled a bunch of updates to some of its core services. Mail has gotten a better UI, which I have to say is much more usable now that the personal folders are placed "above" the applications. The client feels lighter. The attachment limit has been upgraded from 10 to 25 Mb with a new upload tool. Yahoo! is also testing out a new version of its search engine with smart dynamic filters from different medias and you can find a video over at YahooVibes.com. Also Messenger has beome social and offer better video quality though I don't know whether Yahoo! has been using new video/audio codecs or not, the press department was not able to answer this question...

Mac OS X 10.6 has been available for pre-order in the USA for several weeks now but Apple now has updated their various websites around the world to enable Mac users to pre-order the new operating system. One would probably prefer to use the term "upgrade" than "brand new system" but hey, Snow Leopard is sold at 29 euros over here in France, compared to the 129 euros i paid for Leopard, that's a pretty good deal. Mac OS X 10.6 includes full Microsoft Exchange support for Mail, Calendar, and Address Book, is ready for 64-bit machines and adds various improvements. Apple promises a much lighter system (minus 7 GB after installation) as well as a new multimedia platform powered by QuickTime X. Snow leopard will ship on August 28 th.

[Favorite] @: Divx and Yahoo! end their dispute
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1529692/divx-yahoo-dispute
DivX and Yahoo have ended their nearly year long legal dispute. DivX said today that the argy-bargy, which had revolved around a toolbar of all things, is now over and was settled in its favour. DivX didn't provide the amount of the settlement, but we expect it might have caused some pained expressions at Yahoo headquarters. DivX had argued that Yahoo was refusing to honour a two year co-distribution and branding relationship inked in 2007. Under the terms of the deal, Yahoo was supposed to offer its toolbar to DivX downloaders, but apparently Yahoo changed its mind at some point and backed out. In November 2008 DivX decided that enough was enough and took the whole affair to the courts. To its joy the courts decided in its favour.

3 or 4 years ago I read the Da Vinci Code. Like many people I did not quite like the screening of the story. Tom Hanks just does not fit. Yet the novel was pretty good. History and fiction together fits very well. Here is the synopsis : Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning Catholicism--is alive and active. Physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope.

Here is some great news for iPhone users who are running the latest iPhone software. Apple and Yahoo! have collaborated to bring you the ability to sync your Yahoo! Calendar with your iPhone Calendar. We're using an open standard (CalDAV) that has been developed by the CalConnect group, which Yahoo! and Apple are members. Setting up your calendar to sync with your iPhone couldn't be easier. There is nothing to download, and in just a few simple steps on your iPhone, all of your events will be synced -- over the air -- without having to plug into your computer. Now, you really can have a mobile calendar.

Both Mitchell Baker, the former CEO of Mozilla and the chairwoman of Mozilla Foundation, and Harvey Anderson, Mozilla's chief counsel, posted lengthy blogs, citing concerns with Microsoft's proposal and spelling out changes they want to see. John Lilly, Mozilla's current CEO, confirmed that the messages from Mitchell and Anderson were part of a company-wide plan. http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2009/08/18/google-adds-bookmark-sync-to-chrome-browser
Google has added a bookmark sync feature to its Chrome browser. Essentially, this lets users sync their bookmarks between their Chrome browser on different machines. "This new feature makes it easy to keep the same set of bookmarks on all your machines, and stores them alongside your Google Docs for easy web access," says Google's Tim Steele.
Google Chrome To use the bookmark sync feature in Chrome, launch Chrome with the --enable-sync command-line flag. After you set up sync from the Tools menu, Chrome will upload and store your bookmarks to your Google account. When a user wants to change or add a bookmark, the changes will be stored in the cloud and synced on all of the machines being used where the bookmark sync feature is activated.

US prosecutors have charged a man with stealing data relating to 130 million credit and debit cards. Officials say it is the biggest case of identity theft in American history. They say Albert Gonzalez, 28, and two un-named Russian co-conspirators hacked into the payment systems of retailers, including the 7-Eleven chain. Prosecutors say they aimed to sell the data on. If convicted, Mr Gonzalez faces up to 20 years in jail for wire fraud and five years for conspiracy. He would also have to pay a fine of $250,000 (£150,000) for each of the two charges.

The European Commission has reportedly launched an investigation into the outbreak of flaming iPhones and iPods which has apparently raged across Europe this summer. According to the EU Observer the Commission's Industry and Enterprise tentacle has requested information from both the company and member countries. The commission is reacting to such reports as that of Britain's Ken Stanborough, whose daughter's iPod allegedly made a hissing noise, before heating up and spewing out vapour. When Stanborough threw the menace out of his back door, he claimed, "there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air".

Microblogging is one popular type of cake, and Six Apart damn well wants a piece of it too. The company has just added a new element to its TypePad offering: a so-called 'microblog-style blog', which I imagine could just as well simply be dubbed a microblog. If you know what Posterous is and does, it's easy to explain what the new TypePad feature does: exactly the same. If you're a TypePad user, you can now post by e-mailing in an article or using your iPhone to publish whatever short posts, links, videos and pictures you want to put up on the web easily and rapidly. And you can just as easily push the content back out to other services such as Facebook, Twitter and FriendFeed while you're at it, which is entirely in line with what Posterous has been all about since its inception.

Microsoft Corp.'s souped-up Internet search engine gained a little more ground on industry leaders Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. in July, according to data released late Monday. Despite the progress, Microsoft's search engine still remains a distant third in the United States - the main reason that the world's largest software maker plans to team up with Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo next year. By working together in online search, Microsoft and Yahoo are betting that they can pose a more serious threat to Google in the most lucrative part of the Internet advertising market.

[Favorite] @: Yahoo Needs To Fix Yahoo Mail Immediately
http://www.businessinsider.com/why-yahoo-needs-to-worry-about-gmail-and-fix-yahoo-mail-now-2009-8
The techies have already dumped Yahoo Mail. It can't afford to lose everyone else. Time to make a product that even Googlers would be envious of. As TechCrunch points out, Google's GMail has now passed AOL for third place among Web mail properties, with Microsoft's Hotmail and Yahoo Mail next. The biggest problem for Yahoo, as Daring Fireball's John Gruber notes, is that while Yahoo Mail still has impressive market share, it has lost all mindshare. There was a point when getting a Yahoo.com email address was cool. Now it bears the prestige and excitement of lunch at McDonald's.

[Favorite] @: Yahoo pitches paid mail to slow spam
http://www.v3.co.uk/v3/news/2247893/yahoo-pitches-paid-mail-slow
Yahoo is proposing a new paid mail service as a way to sidestep spam. The company is trying out a new service known as CentMail. The site allows users to purchase packs of 500 virtual stamps at a cost of $5, or one cent per stamp. Proceeds from the sales are then given to a participating charity selected by the user, and each of the email stamps carries the logo of the charity. In addition to benefitting charitable groups, Yahoo is also hoping that the program cuts down on spam. By adding the unique stamp to each message, the program is designed to breeze through spam filters. "Anyone you email can automatically verify your donation and confirm you're not a spammer," the company wrote on the CentMail site. "Since spammers send millions of emails every day, it is prohibitively expensive for them to donate even just 1 cent per email."
